Content overload is exactly what it sounds like – a literal overload of content that is clogging up the various online marketing roadways. The internet is currently teeming with every type of content you can possibly imagine – from blog posts to web pages. This makes it incredibly important for you to use effective content marketing techniques that will help you stand out.

According to Domo’s data, consumers post 216,000 new Instagram photos, post 277,000 new tweets and conduct a whopping 4,000,000 search queries every single minute. If that doesn’t make your cute little piece of content feel like a tiny fishing boat surrounded by a sea of battleships, I don’t know what will.

While you can approach content overload like Effie Trinket and hope that the odds are “ever in your favor”, it is much more effective to adopt a purposeful approach and take control of your own content destiny. With a determined attitude and a little know-how, it is possible to make your content stand out, despite the jaw-dropping odds against you. Here are a few of our favorite methods for combatting content overload:

1. Produce Valuable Content

The key to getting someone to click on your article or blog post is to produce content that offers value to them. Put yourself in the shoes of one of your consumers. What interests them? What do they need? What problems do they face? Once you answer these questions, focus on creating content that helps enhance their lives in some way. Producing valuable content is the best way to earn – and keep – the attention of consumers.

2. Don’t Be Annoying

It may be hard to get people to notice your content, but don’t ever stoop to being annoying. “Click-bait” headlines, keyword stuffing and misleading titles are all low-level tactics that most readers can spot in a glance. Instead, take a lesson from expert marketers who produce blogs and articles that people actually WANT to click on because the content itself is helpful and interesting. Having trouble determining what consumers are interested in? Try using the tried-and-true methods of monitoring trends and top keyword searches. Google Trends and other similar resources can reveal helpful information about what consumers are currently interested in and actively searching for online.

3. Craft an Engaging Title

In the online marketing world, a title is much like a first impression in real life. If your title seems boring, “salesy” or completely irrelevant to consumers, they won’t click on it. HubSpot and Market Domination Media teamed up to create a very interesting infographic on writing better titles and headlines. According to the infographic, certain words like “photo” and “infographic” in titles tend to increase consumer engagement, while words like “free”, “cure” and “magic” tend to drive consumers away.
